first_imgThe Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) has opened the 4-mile stretch of Route 100 that runs from Readsboro to Heartwellville. This segment of Route 100, which connects Route 100 to Route 8, received heavy damage from Tropical Storm Irene, and has been closed since the storm struck on August 28.Reopening this portion of Route 100 marks a significant milestone for the Rutland Incident Command Center, which was established following Tropical Storm Irene, as it is the command center’s final section of roadway that remained closed. Although several roads within the Rutland command center’s sphere of operation remain under construction, all of its roads are now open to pubic travel.Immediately following Irene, VTrans divided the state into three incident command areas: southwest, southeast and north. The Rutland Incident Command Center covers 52 towns in Vermont’s southwest region.‘We are all extremely proud of the progress that the Rutland Incident Command Center has achieved in less than six weeks,’ said VTrans Secretary Brian Searles. ‘Its success is truly a testament to the hard work of hundreds and hundreds of individuals. But as we celebrate, the traveling public must keep in mind that there is still much work to be done, not only in the Rutland region, but throughout the state, before all of our storm-damaged roads are ready for winter.’Construction crews remain out in force throughout storm-damaged areas, including those in the Rutland region, doing work such as paving, repairing guard rail, unplugging culverts and conducting a host of other highway repairs. While Route 100 through Readsboro is now open, parts of it remain gravel and more work will be needed before the road is returned to normal.Questions regarding storm-damaged roads and bridges related to Tropical Storm Irene can be answered by calling VTrans’ Irene Storm Center at 1-800-Vermont. People can also visit VTrans’ website at www.aot.state.vt.us(link is external) where they can sign up for travel updates for their mobile phone, and follow the agency’s progress on both Facebook and Twitter. VTrans 10.6.2011last_img read more

first_imgBARCELONA: Star striker Lionel Messi has touched the 700th career goal landmark after he scored from the penalty spot in Barcelona’s 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou in the ongoing La Liga.Messi, who converted a spot kick to reach the milestone on Tuesday, has scored 630 times for Barca in 724 appearances in all competitions and another 70 for Argentina in 138 caps. The Barcelona forward had scored his first goal on May 1, 2005 at the Camp Nou against Albacete, coming off a fine assist from Ronaldinho. “And from there, the story just hasn’t stopped, with goals coming on all shapes and sizes. Lots of them. Lots and lots of them,” Barcelona said on their website. In 2012, he netted 91 times, beating Pele’s previous record of 75. His 599th professional goal was a particularly stunning direct free kick that Las Palmas keeper Chichizola had no chance of stopping. His 600th goal was also a free kick against Oblak. “Messi is infinitely ambitious and still has further targets to aim for. He needs just 13 to beat Pele’s record number of goals for a single team. And with 724 appearances to his name he doesn’t have too long to go before he tops the 767 of Xavi Hernandez,” the club further said. The 33-year-old has a contract until 2021 at Camp Nou. A clause that would have allowed Messi to leave for free this summer recently expired, ensuring that he remains at the club for another 12 months.
