Share Tweetcenter_img Local governments have been told that they are one of the best examples of democracy in Dominica.Dominica is observing May as Local Government Month under the theme “Consolidating Our Gains, Building Stronger Communities”.Chairman of the Dominica Association of Local Authorities, Hyacinth Thomas who delivered an address in observance of Local Government Month on Wednesday, described local government as having the potential to unite communities. “Mention must be made of government and more so, the Ministry of Community Development, in the development of Dominica. Local government is not only one of the best forms of democracy in action, but it also has the potential to bring communities together”.She said due to the frequent turnover of local counselors, local authorities need to be continuously trained and empowered in leadership and management skills, as well as skills related to the organization of people and communities, on an ongoing basis.“The belief that people have the right to become masters of their destinies and to organize the affairs of their communities is as the heart of the philosophy of local government, thus the importance of the construction of local authorities to the standard of life and living to their communities,” she said.Hyacinth also took the opportunity to mention the pioneers of Dominica’s local authorities for their insight into the development of Dominica through volunteerism.“I also call on our local authorities to continue their work to build and beautify our communities in other to make them tourism friendly,” she added.She also called on Dominicans to keep Dominica clean as well as violent free.Dominica Vibes News 27 Views   no discussions LocalNews Local government one of the best examples of democracy- Hyacinth Thomas by: – May 3, 2012last_img read more
