first_imgThe English football season returns on Sunday when Premier League champions Chelsea meet FA Cup winners Arsenal in the FA Community Shield at Wembley. The match comes 64 days after the Gunners ended the domestic season with their 4-0 FA Cup win over Aston Villa.Neither side have added significantly to their squads over the summer – though goalkeeper Petr Cech will make his Arsenal debut against his old side.Chelsea could hand a start to new signing Radamel Falcao.Falcao, 29, spent last season with Manchester United but endured a poor campaign, scoring just four goals in 29 games. He signed a season-long loan deal from Monaco earlier this summer, while Chelsea’s only other signing is goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Stoke. He replaces Cech, 33, who played 494 games in 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge before his £10m move in JuneChelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that striker Diego Costa (hamstring) and defender Gary Cahill (nose) are both fit after pre-season injury concerns.A rivalry renewed: Wenger v MourinhoSunday sees two Premier League giants collide, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hoping to beat a side managed by Jose Mourinho for the first time. Wenger is yet to taste victory against Mourinho in 13 attempts and the two managers have already been involved in one disagreement this summer.Mourinho suggested that Arsenal had spent more money than Chelsea over the last few years, with Wenger responding by saying he “does not listen to what people think or say”.On Friday Mourinho repeated his belief that Arsenal can mount a serious title challenge this season but played down his rivalry with Wenger. He said: “It doesn’t matter about Arsenal, it doesn’t matter about the manager. “I never made it an explosion of happiness or special pride in my victories over Arsenal. I do not make a drama if one day we lose.”In return Wenger light-heartedly suggested the media favour Mourinho: “I’ll leave your love story with him to continue without interfering.”I wouldn’t like to interfere in that.”When challenged that Mourinho believes it is Arsenal who receive preferential treatment, Wenger replied: “So it’s all about love.”Arsenal – who have not scored against Chelsea in over eight hours of play – did win last season’s Community Shield – beating Manchester City 3-0 at Wembley. –last_img read more

first_imgWEEK 10 NON-PPR RANKINGSQuarterback | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | KickerThe story of Jones’ season has been more frustrating. Almost every game, he was more effective than Peyton Barber but rarely saw more work. Sunday, though, Jones outcarried Barber 18 to four and gained 67 yards with a touchdown on the ground. He also remained on the field in many late-game passing situations that normally fall to Dare Ogunbowale. Because of how frustrating Bruce Arians’ backfield split has been, we can’t say for certain that Jones will remain the man. But he’s still unowned in a lot of leagues, and if he can get 15 carries a game, he’s also in the RB2 range. One of the more intriguing battles to watch as the week goes on is in Arizona, where Kenyan Drake played better than expected in his Cardinals debut against the tough 49ers’ defense. David Johnson (back, ankle) and/or Chase Edmonds (hamstring) should have a chance to make it back from injury after last Thursday’s game. Kliff Kingsbury has said it will be a committee, although you’d have to imagine that Johnson, if fully healthy, will get the bulk of the work there. Any back in that fast-paced offense has fantasy value with enough workload, though.WEEK 10 PPR RANKINGS: Running back | Wide receiver | Tight endWe’d be concerned more about Chris Carson’s matchup (@ 49ers) this week if not for how successful Drake was against San Francisco. Carson did fumble twice Sunday, losing one, so that return of an early-season narrative is worth keeping an eye on. We’ll also continue to watch the backfield split with the Niners, where Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman continue to share carries, and with the Chargers, where Melvin Gordon finally looked a bit like his old self in Week 9.WEEK 10 DFS LINEUPS:Y! cash | Y! GPP | DK cash | DK GPP | FD cash | FD GPPBye weeks knock off a number of committee backfields this week: Royce Freeman/Phillip Lindsay, Sony Michel/James White, Jordan Howard/Miles Sanders, Carlos Hyde/Duke Johnson and Adrian Peterson are all off. The most notable player on bye at RB is Leonard Fournette.MORE WEEK 10:Waiver pickups | FAAB planner | Snap counts | Trade values | Fantasy playoff SOS Reminder: These rankings will be adjusted throughout week, so check back often for the latest updates and analysis!MORE WEEK 10 DFS: Stacks | Values | Lineup BuilderWeek 10 Fantasy RB RankingsThese rankings are for standard, non-PPR leagues.RankPlayer1Christian McCaffrey, CAR @ GB2Saquon Barkley, NYG @ NYJ3Alvin Kamara, NO vs. ATL. We’ll have to see how Kamara (ankle) is doing health-wise out of the Saints’ bye, but he should be in line for a big week as long as he’s healthy.4Dalvin Cook, MIN @ DAL5Ezekiel Elliott, DAL vs. MIN6Derrick Henry, TEN vs. KC. Henry continues to be one of the highest-volume running backs in football, and the Chiefs allow the third-most fantasy points per game (FPPG) to backs. Expect a big week.7Josh Jacobs, OAK vs. LAC8Nick Chubb, CLE vs. BUF9Marlon Mack, IND vs. MIA. No matter whether Jacoby Brissett or Brian Hoyer is starting, you can rely on Mack against the Dolphins porous run defense.10Mark Ingram, BAL @ CIN. The Bengals allow the second-most FPPG to RBs, so while Ingram might not normally rank quite this high, it’s deserved for Week 10. 11Le’Veon Bell, NYJ vs. NYG12David Montgomery, CHI vs. DET. The Lions allow the most FPPG to running backs this year. Montgomery almost always sees double-digit carries and a little passing-game involvement, so as long as he gets his usual workload, he should have Week 10 success.13Todd Gurley, LAR @ PIT14David Johnson, ARZ @ TB. Johnson (ankle, back), Kenyan Drake and Chase Edmonds (hamstring) all would have value if the other two were out, but if more than one is active, you have to defer to DJ, who has the most upside and should be heavily involved in the passing game, even with Drake in town.15Chris Carson, SEA @ SF. The Niners run defense is less scary after Kenyan Drake had success against it, but Carson’s two Week 9 fumbles (one lost) have us a little concerned about his job security, at least enough to bump him down this far. 16Aaron Jones, GB vs. CAR17Devonta Freeman, ATL @ NO18Tevin Coleman, SF vs. SEA. Matt Breida remains too heavily involved to count on any more four-TD games in the near future, but Coleman is still an important player in a run-first offense and should start in fantasy leagues because of that. 19Jaylen Samuels, PIT vs. LAR. Most of Samuels’ value seems likely to come from his catches — he had 13 in Week 9 — while James Conner (shoulder) is out. If Conner is back, you can forget about Samuels, who at least has the potential to do more in the run game.20Devin Singletary, BUF @ CLE. He finally outdid Frank Gore in carries, rushing 20 times in Week 9. The Singletary takeover of this backfield looks about complete, and so you can start him as an RB2 with confidence. 21Ronald Jones, TB vs. ARZ. Jones outcarried Peyton Barber 18-4 in Week 9, and we want to think that will continue. Because of how Bruce Arians seems to continuously fool us, it may not, but you’ve got to be on Jones at least in Week 10 against an Arizona defense allowing 4.4 yards per carry to running backs. 22Joe Mixon, CIN vs. BAL23Melvin Gordon, LAC @ OAK. Finally, Gordon looked like a solid NFL running back again with 20 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns in Week 9. It appears he’s the lead dog again in this backfield and works as an RB2 most weeks going forward. 24Damien Williams, KC @ TEN. Williams and McCoy keep swapping back and forth, but after 125 rushing yards (including a 91-yard touchdown run), it’s Williams that gets the edge in our rankings this week.25Austin Ekeler, LAC @ OAK26Jamaal Williams, GB vs. CAR27Matt Breida, SF vs. SEA28Ty Johnson, DET @ CHI. Johnson will probably lead the Lions in carries but struggle to create much momentum on the ground. The medium volume makes him playable as an unexciting FLEX option. 29Kenyan Drake, ARZ @ TB. If Johnson and Edmonds remain out, slide Drake up the rankings, as he’ll be looking at a heavy workload after running well in his first game with the Cardinals.30Trey Edmunds, PIT vs. LAR. Edmunds had 12 carries for 73 yards with James Conner out Sunday, so if that injury status repeats itself, maybe Edmunds can repeat his ground production, too. 31Latavius Murray, NO vs. ATL. If Alvin Kamara remains out after the bye, Murray becomes a rock solid RB2 for Week 10.32Gus Edwards, BAL @ CIN33Kalen Ballage, MIA @ IND.34Peyton Barber, TB vs. ARZ35Frank Gore, BUF @ CLE. It looks like he’s been surpassed by Devin Singletary. He might get 10 carries against Cleveland but not do a ton with them. Another week of heavy Singletary usage can probably make Gore expendable in fantasy.36LeSean McCoy, KC @ TEN37Nyheim Hines, IND vs. MIA. Hines continues to see very limited involvement in the passing game, and if Indy handles business against Miami, gameflow will be working against him, too. 38Tarik Cohen, CHI vs. DET. The Lions allow the most FPPG to RBs, including being vulnerable against receiving backs. Cohen is a decent FLEX play this week, and his value is obviously higher in PPR.39J.D. McKissic, DET @ CHI. McKissic looks like a PPR option going forward, but if Detroit struggles to move the ball at times against Chicago, Week 10 might not be the week to deploy McKissic in your lineup.40Alexander Mattison, MIN @ DAL41Kareem Hunt, CLE vs. BUF. Hunt is back from suspension for Week 10, although he’s been away from the team and Nick Chubb has a stranglehold on the starting job. If Hunt is ever going to take a decent chunk of work away from Chubb, it shouldn’t be for a few weeks. 42Jordan Wilkins, IND vs. MIA43Rashaad Penny, SEA @ SF44Dare Ogunbowale, TB vs. ARZ45Darrel Williams, KC @ TEN46Dion Lewis, TEN vs. KC47Raheem Mostert, SF vs. SEA48Darrell Henderson, LAR @ PIT49Tony Pollard, DAL vs. MIN50Giovani Bernard, CIN vs. BAL51C.J. Prosise, SEA vs. BAL52Dontrell Hilliard, CLE vs. BUF53Wayne Gallman, NYG @ NYJ Devin Singletary and Ronald Jones were both well overdue for breakouts. We’ve touted them both, but for various reasons — injuries for Singletary and curious usage for Jones — neither had really had a top-tier NFL game prior to Sunday. After last week, we can’t say that any longer. Both had shining moments, and both, if their usage continues, will justify their elevated spots in our Week 10 fantasy RB rankings. And don’t forget — Kareem Hunt is back for the Browns this week, although it will probably be a few weeks until he affects Nick Chubb at all.For the first time this season, Singletary received more carries than Frank Gore (20 to 11). He was efficient, too, averaging 4.8 yards per carry for 95 yards total on the heavy workload. He added three catches on four targets for 45 yards. Buffalo had already been playing Singletary many more snaps than Gore, so it seemed like only a matter of time before his carries reflected that. A Week 10 game in Cleveland shouldn’t slow Singletary down, and he’s now firmly in the RB2 tier.last_img read more

first_img11 January 2013 South African Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant has called on striking workers, unions and farmers in the Western Cape to settle their disputes through negotiation, to exercise their rights responsibly and to refrain from violence. The minister’s call, made on Friday, follows attempts by Labour Director-General Nkosinathi Nhleko to broker a peace deal between trade unions and Agri-SA in Cape Town. The department said the attempt seems to have been rejected by farm owners’ representatives. There have reportedly been sporadic cases of violence, including the closing of national roads, since the industrial action began on Wednesday. Oliphant said that while farmworkers had every right to demonstrate, violence undermined their cause. She called for good leadership on the part of the labour movement in the sector. “I would also like to remind the leadership in the province that the current action is unprocedural and therefore the workers are not protected by labour laws. They have to think carefully about what they are exposing workers to and whether in the end it is worth their while,” Oliphant said. “I would also like to call on the farmers to engage their workers on the best way forward. At the end of the day, the main thing is negotiation between employer and employee, and so far I am not convinced that there is a serious attempt by farmers to negotiate.” The workers are demanding a daily wage of R150. Currently, the minimum wage, as set out in the agricultural sector determination, is R69. Agri-SA has said it has no mandate to negotiate in the matter and that the demands were “unrealistic” and would drive its members out of business. At the same time, farmers in the Western Cape have not been forthcoming in terms of putting a counter-offer on the table. Instead, they have been insisting on a sectoral determination process, which is under way by the Labour Department. The strike takes place parallel with the public hearings process through which the department is soliciting views from labour and business about the new sectoral determination, due to kick in at the beginning of March. The process will be consolidated by the Employment Conditions Commission (ECC), the body which advises the minister on wages and conditions of employment, for her final decision. Oliphant said it was unfortunate that farmers had sought to negate the principle of negotiations and collective bargaining. “This does not augur well for stability and industrial peace in the sector.” For their part, unions have said workers have “borne the brunt of economic violence” from employers in the form of “slave wages”, and alleged that some workers had not being paid over the festive season. During November’s farmworker strikes, there were reports of damage to property, with 271 workers arrested for public violence and heightened tension on the farms as employers brought in private security. first_imgRaking up the Ayodhya issue, BJP president and Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday accused the Congress of stalling the case in the Supreme Court. He also alleged that the Congress Party kept the Kashmir problem hanging fire for 70 years in its “greed” to protect its vote bank. “For so many years this judgment was not happening. We also wanted a resolution to this dispute within the framework of the Constitution. Now see how with the blessings of Lord Ram the Supreme Court has cleared the way for the construction of a grand Ram temple.” “Everyone wanted a Ram temple in Ayodhya but the Congress kept stalling the case,” Mr. Shah addressed the election rallies in Manika and Lohardaga, as he kicked off the BJP’s campaign for the Jharkhand Assembly polls. He also accused the Congress of delaying a solution to the Kashmir issue for seven decades. “The Congress Party left the Kashmir problem hanging fire for 70 years in its greed to protect its vote bank. Modiji [PM Narendra Modi] has erased the blot of Article 370 from the crown jewel of ‘Bharat Mata’ and paved the way for Kashmir’s development,” he said. Emphasising the importance his Party attached to the issue, Mr. Shah said the Modi government scrapped Articles 370 and 35A during the very first Parliament session it faced after winning an absolute majority for a second time. The Centre framed a defence policy that has protected the borders and freed the country of terrorism, he asserted. “Terrorists… carried out attacks regularly in the country during the Congress regimes, but the Narendra Modi government gave a befitting reply to them,” Mr. Shah said, referring to surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army across the LoC. The BJP president also accused the Congress-JMM combine of indulging in corruption and “hoodwinking” the tribals and the poor. The JMM leadership indulged in corruption of thousands of crores of rupees, while the BJP dispensation led by Raghubar Das gave a stable government and took the State forward on the path of development, he said. “JMM leader Hemant Soren should be asked which Party he has aligned with, a Party which hoodwinked tribals for 70 years. I would like to ask the Congress president and Rahul Gandhi to give an account of what they have done for tribals. The BJP will also give an account of the work it has done for the State,” Mr. Shah said. He also wanted to know why the Congress failed to provide electricity, cooking gas connection, health cards, toilets and homes to the people. The Union Home Minister lauded the Raghubar Das government for “freeing” the State of the Naxal issue, saying it was the most important achievement of the current BJP dispensation. The BJP, in its election manifesto, will promise constitution of a committee that will consider raising the percentage of reservation for the backward sections after coming to power again. “The backward sections have an important position in the social constitution of Jharkhand but they don’t get reservation in proportion to their population,” he said. Reaching out to the tribals who have a sizeable presence in the mineral-rich State, Mr. Shah said the Modi government set up a museum in the memory of tribal leaders who fought valiantly for the country’s freedom. He also sought to remind the electorate that it was a BJP government which created a separate State of Jharkhand for which many sacrificed their lives. “Atal ji [Atal Bihari Vajpayee] created Jharkhand and Narendra Modi will embellish and spruce it up,” he told the election rally in Manika. “People kept dying, youth sacrificed their lives, but the dream of statehood remained unfulfilled under Congress rule,” he said.last_img read more
