Governor Wolf, Bi-Partisan Governors Urging Congress to Allow Dreamers to Remain in U.S.

first_img December 20, 2017 National Issues,  Press Release Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today joined a bi-partisan group of governors urging Congress to address the critical issue of the possible deportation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program participants, also known as Dreamers.“I am incredibly pleased and proud to be a part of this group of Democratic and Republican governors who understand the devastating impact of the possible deportation of nearly 800,000 American immigrants,” Governor Wolf said. “The Dreamer participants are Americans in every sense of the word. They have grown up, been educated, and established their lives here. To deport any of these Americans is cruel, and we need a permanent solution to this now.”In a letter to Congressional leaders, Governor Wolf and nine other governors are urging Congress to come together quickly to shape a bi-partisan solution that allows Dreamers to remain in the United States to continue their constructive contributions to our society. From the letter:“As each of us cherishes time spent with family and friends in this holiday season, let us also remember the nearly 800,000 young people eligible for DACA, known as “Dreamers,” living in our states.  These are individuals who played no role in the decision to come here and they have known no other home but the United States.“Already, more than 12,000 Dreamers have lost their protective status and are susceptible to deportation. This is not a theoretical peril, but in fact an immediate and urgent one, because more than 100 young people in our cities and towns are losing their protective status every day. Those numbers will accelerate dramatically without a legislative fix.“We stand with these young American immigrants not only because it is good for our communities and a strong American 21st century economy, but also because it is the right thing for our nation to do.”Governor Wolf signed the letter along with Govs. Kasich (OH), Hickenlooper (CO), Bullock (MT), Sandoval (NV), Baker (MA), Scott (VT), Dayton (MN), Cooper (NC), and Walker (AK).The governors urged support of these young American immigrants to help them to continue to play a productive role in their communities and to remain in the only home they have ever known.Read the full content of the letter to Congressional leaders below.
