first_imgAlthough it’s hardly a new technology, recent cyber-skirmishes and demands for better privacy online have put the anonymizing network the Tor Project in the spotlight, including a story earlier this month in The New York Times Magazine, a harbinger perhaps of mainstream adoption. Tor has been around for almost a decade, originally developed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and now used by activists, dissidents, journalists, and well, anyone in order to protect the privacy of online activities. According to the Tor Project’s metrics, the network has had between 100,000 and 300,000 users per day over the course of the past few months. How Tor WorksTor protects its users from surveillance known as “traffic analysis.” Even if you encrypt your data, as the Tor website notes, traffic analysis can still reveal “a great deal about what you’re doing and, possible, what you’re saying” as it focuses on the header used for routing – something that discloses the source, the destination, the date and time, and the size of what’s being send. Related Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Flaws in the System?According to a report this week in Wired, researchers at the University of Regensburg have found some vulnerabilities in the Tor network. “The attack doesn’t quite make a surfer’s activity an open book,” writes Wired’s John Borland, “but offers the ability for someone on the same local network – a Wi-Fi network provider, or an ISP working at law enforcement (or a regime’s) request, for example – to gain a potentially good idea of sites an anonymous surfer is viewing.” According to the research, someone could run the Tor network, monitor how certain sites appeared when accessed through Tor, and develop a database of this sort of “fingerprint.” Using pattern recognition software, it’s possible to glean a match (with about 55% certainty) between a source and destination. The article does add that there are some ways to help mitigate against this and muddy any results: requesting multiple sites at once, for example, would complicate the analysis. And with increasing attention to privacy issues – from the prying eyes of advertisers and governments alike – it’s unlikely that this research will discourage people from using the Tor Network. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting audrey watters Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tor obscures this traffic data. It works to anonymize your identity and activity by distributing your transactions over several places on the Internet, so that no single point can be linked to you or your destination – “a deliberately byzantine system of virtual tunnels that conceal the origins and destinations of data, and thus the identity of clients,” as The New York Times describes it. In other words, rather than taking a direct route from the source to destination, data on the Tor network takes a random pathway through several relays, so that no one can tell where the data came from, where it’s headed, or the complete path of the data. Each “hop” along the way is encrypted separately as well. Tor doesn’t solve all privacy problems online. (It doesn’t try to.) It doesn’t anonymize your visits to websites, prevent cookies or other tracking mechanisms, for example. But it does protect the traffic of your data along the way. first_imgThe Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Monday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe into the multi-crore Srijan scam, a day after an accused in the case died at a hospital in Bhagalpur. The accused, Mahesh Mandal, allegedly helped the Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti, an NGO, siphon off government funds to the tune of ₹870 crore with the connivance of bank and government officials. Mandal who was the Bhagalpur district welfare department accountant was arrested on August 13. He died of kidney-related complications on Sunday night. The RJD called for the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and asked his deputy in the Cabinet, Sushil Kumar Modi, to ensure a “fair and impartial probe”.“Nitish Kumar is aware of Srijan scam since 2007… rather than taking action he was encouraging scamsters… the first death among 13 arrested in the scam has happened and the one who died [Mahesh Mandal] was the father of a rich leader of Nitish Kumar’s party,” RJD chief Lalu Prasad tweeted on Monday. His younger son and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav, addressing reporters outside the State Assembly, demanded a “Supreme Court-monitored probe into the Srijan scam, which is an even bigger scam than the Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh”.Mr. Yadav’s mother and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi also demanded the Chief Minister’s resignation. The JD(U) and the BJP, dismissed the RJD’s allegations, saying “RJD chief Lalu Prasad, at least, has no moral right to demand probe into the scam”.18 arrests till now: police“Altogether 18 people have been arrested and 11 FIRs have been lodged in the Srijan scam… the scam started in 2003 and until the CBI formally takes over it, the State police will continue the probe,” State police chief P.K. The telephone lines are down,” said Bishnupada Sethi, Special Relief Commissioner of Odisha.“We are, however, relieved that the cyclone has left Odisha. We are compiling information but we don’t have exact information about deaths. More than 1.2 million people have been evacuated, more than 30 lakh people have been badly hit and that number is likely to go up.”Terming the cyclone a tragedy of humongous nature, Mr. Patnaik said, “Fani is one of the rarest of rare cyclones – the first to hit in 43 years and one of three to hit in 150 years. Because of the rarity, the prediction and tracking of the cyclone was challenging. In 24 hours, one was not sure of the trajectory it was going to take.“Fani had a landfall at Puri with windspeeds of over 200 kmph and gusting up to 240 kmph. It tore apart the infrastructure, especially power, telecom and water supply.”Districts such as Puri, Khurdha, Cuttack and Nayagarh have been affected the most.  Since nearly 25,000 tourists were asked to leave the town a day before Fani hit the coast, the administration heaved a sigh of relief. The fishing community has been hit badly. Boats were seen overturned on houses. The administration, which had prepositioned ready-to-eat food, had provided food to the people affected by Fani.It was a similar situation in Bhubaneswar, where lakhs of people residing in slums have been rendered homeless. Roofs of thatched houses had been blown away by the storm. The return of heat and humidity has made matters worse. Apart from the inconvenience caused to people in the absence of power, personnel belonging to disaster response forces are having a tough time carrying out restoration work. There is no official information about the death toll, though an official estimate put the figure at over 20.Prediction, tracking was challenging, says CM PatnaikChief Minister Naveen Patnaik reviewed the situation on Saturday while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to take stock of the situation on Sunday. Also Read Life in Odisha remains paralysed a day after cyclone Fani Cyclone Fani has virtually run the pilgrim town of Puri in Odisha into the ground. The State control room in Bhubanewswar is yet to establish contact with many affected districts. first_imgHeeding a demand of saints for land titles, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath said here on Tuesday that if the government could give land titles to industrialists and businessmen, why not give them to saints and hermits as well.“Our country is not known for its economy or military power,” he said, “It is known for its spiritual power . The entire world looks at us in wonder. There is no country like ours with such diversity. Yet, spiritual power unites us, and the country stands under one flag.”He was addressing a congregation of saints and hermits from across the country at the ‘Sant Samagam Sammelan’, organised by the State Department of Spirituality.Exhorting saints to direct the youth, especially those living in cities, to spirituality, he said, it was their duty to make sure youngsters didn’t lose track and remained connected to spiritual power.“Almost 35 years ago, I had said in the Lok Sabha that we had created so many departments, yet most importantly, there was a need for Adhyatmik Vibhag [Spirituality Department],” said Mr. Nath. Former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh said, “Wearing orange robes, people are selling churan [power]. Wearing orange robes, rapes are happening. Rapes are happening in temples. Is this our religion? Those who’ve disrespected our Sanatana religion, even God won’t forgive them.”Veiled jibe In a veiled jibe at the BJP, Mr. Nath said, “When I entered here, I thought it was a happy day. But then someone must be feeling pain in their stomach, you know who, right? They are those who publicise they’ve taken the contract of religion.”“When we enter temples, hold such functions or even talk of religion, they feel pain,” added Mr. Nath. Representing the saints, ‘Computer’ Baba, said they stood by the Congress.last_img read more
