SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS Wilmington Highs New 4Week Senior Internship Program Is A Success

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — At a recent Wilmington School Committee, WHS Principal Linda Peters provided an update on the High School’s new and improved Senior Exploration Program. For the first time, all seniors were expected to participate in the program by completing an internship or project during the last four weeks of their high school career.Administrators and guidance counselors closely monitored every senior’s overall academic performance and attendance to ensure all seniors met the eligibility requirement for the program.Internships and project work began on April 29 and ended May 24. Seniors did not have traditional classes during the four weeks, but those enrolled in AP classes continued in their courses until the exam or until their teacher required. All seniors either presented their project to a panel of teachers who volunteered to evaluate them on May 28-30, or prepared a demonstration related to their internship experience at the school’s Internship Expo on May 29.The Senior Exploration Program was included on every student’s transcript and all students will receive a grade based on a rubric.Several students spoke to the School Committee about their experiences in the Senior Exploration Program.Ben Packer discussed his internship with Dr. John Sullivan.“I’m really interested in medicine and want to become an oncologist,” said Packer. “This internship allowed me to explore what its like to work in outpatient care. I answered phones, faxed, filled out prescriptions, filed prescription, and filed charts.”Packer would attend school every other day — including his three AP classes. On days he wasn’t at school, he worked at his internship from 8am to 2pm.A group of students — Ryan, Shawn and Sam — discussed their senior project — building a pergola in the school’s courtyard.“We never realized how much really went into the project. It was a lot more than buying wood and slapping it together,” they told the Committee. “There was a lot of planning, designing and budgeting…. We had to meet with people from Town Hall and fill out a building permit.”“We wanted to beautify the courtyard and leave our mark while setting the bar high for for future seniors,” the group continued. “We had a lot of people and faculty show support for our project. We wanted to give back to our community. We hope the pergola is out there for a very long time…. Getting to have this experience was something special.”Principal Linda Peters discussed how the Senior Exploration Program impacted her and her seniors“This has been a great experience for me. I met with every senior before they decided what they wanted to do. It helped me get to know everyone a little bit better,” said Peters. “All students were very cooperative and managed to find something…. Students are able to do things they’ve developed an interest in during their four years here.”“Writing a proposal, managing their time outside of school, collaborating and communicating with others outside of school, using or developing their talents/interests, presenting their final product/experience — these are all skills that we have been helping them to develop over their time in high school. [This program] gives them the opportunity to transfer those skills,” Peters told the Committee.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter.
