Quebec Premier Francois Legault says his government will move quickly to prohibit the wearing of religious symbols by teachers and other public-sector workers in positions of authority.Addressing the legislature for the first time since his Coalition Avenir Quebec was elected Oct. 1, Legault said Quebecers have had enough of the debate over secularism. The plan to restrict religious symbols such as hijabs and kippas has been denounced by some rights advocates, but Legault said the government remains “very firm” in its intentions. He reiterated that the ban will apply to primary and secondary school teachers as well as police officers, prosecutors, judges and prison guards. The Premier said his government’s top priority will be education, and he promised steady funding increases to stop Quebec from lagging behind in academic success.Legault invoked the daring of early settlers as he called on Quebecers to overcome the fear of change and the fear of making mistakes. The Canadian Press

Celebrity models Abbey Clancy and Danielle Lloyd as well as former Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon have taken to Twitter to voice their outrage over what an RSPCA officer described as the worst case of cruelty to animals he’s ever dealt with. The beauties have also alerted their nearly 1 million combined Twitter followers to PETA’s £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible.A small dog was reportedly left to die in Birkenhead cemetery after what appeared to be a lifetime of abuse that left virtually every bone in his body broken. Fondly named Elmo by veterinary staff, he was humanely euthanised because of the severity of his injuries.“Someone in Merseyside must know something about the cruel individual who committed this atrocious act, and we’re calling on anyone with information to come forward”, says PETA Associate Director Elisa Allen. “A person capable of deliberately causing this kind of suffering to a helpless animal demonstrates a very worrying psychological state and must be found.”Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

The Major League Baseball Players Trust has announced it will provide $1 million in funding to support nonprofits dedicated to providing relief and recovery to the victims of the recent spate of natural disasters occurring across the Americas. In keeping with its commitment and practice of assisting others when disasters strike, the Players Trust will distribute the funds in a manner that will support short-term relief as well as long-term recovery efforts in areas suffering in the wake of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes.Major Leaguers are passionate about supporting the places where they work and live, and, for many Players, the disasters have devastated areas that so many of them call home. The nonprofits designated to receive portions of the $1 million in funding reflect Players’ places of residence, including Habitat For Humanity, Feeding America, Project Cure/Curando Mexico, Friends of Caritas Cubana and United Way Worldwide/Fondos Unidos de Puerto Rico. Additional grant recipients will be identified and announced in the future.Major Leaguers also announced today that fans can help support this effort, too, as the MLBPA will donate an additional $5.00, on top of the Players Trust’s $1 million, in support of this cause for every download of its new Infield Chatter mobile app, now through the end of the World Series. Infield Chatter, a free community created by the Players for the Fans, can be found in the App Store, Google Play or here.“On behalf of all Major Leaguers, I’d like to first let the people in the areas affected by the disasters know that our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time. It is our hope that these funds will enhance the support of organizations working tirelessly to assist our neighbors as they strive to recover as quickly as possible,” said Curtis Granderson, a trustee of the Players Trust. “As we all know, natural disasters can happen anywhere and at any time, forever changing millions of lives. Because of this, we encourage others to find ways to assist with the recovery efforts in any of the affected areas.”Through the Players Trust, Major Leaguers take an active role in responding to world crises with both financial and in-person support. The players’ collective focus is to provide funds and awareness in these areas long after the initial contributions stop and the spotlight fades. Through past experiences, the players understand that the needs in these areas will far outlast the initial response and support. The Players Trust has now provided nearly $5 million to help disaster affected communities in Cuba, Philippines, Japan, Haiti, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States by offering financial support to more than 20 nonprofits providing a variety of relief and recovery efforts that focus on local collaboration, volunteerism and sustainability, while training and empowering people to rebuild their own communities. In addition, through the efforts of the Trust, many players have personally traveled to various affected communities to participate in and focus attention on the necessity for ongoing support. It is anticipated that many Players will become actively involved on the ground in some of the areas hit hardest by the recent disasters once their baseball season ends.

New Delhi: India-domiciled companies filed over 4,600 patents in the US between 2015-2018, a majority of which were from the technology domain, a report by industry body Nasscom said Friday. The report titled ‘Emerging Technologies: Leading the Next Wave of IP Creation for India’ highlighted how companies in India are creating intellectual property (IP) assets in the US, which is one of the most favoured destinations for filing patents. Interestingly, Indian start-ups have filed nearly 200 patents in the US during 2015-18, and a majority of these focused on emerging technology areas including image processing, artificial intelligence, cyber security, vehicle technology and Internet of Things (IoT). Innovation is the key to driving transformation and such patents and trademarks are a testimony to this transformational growth, Nasscom President Debjani Ghosh said. “As a country, India can further strengthen its potential as an innovation hub through more investments in research and strategic collaborations. We are confident that we will usher in a new wave of innovation and intelligence in the country,” she added.

A long road trip can be boring, uncomfortable and emotionally and physically draining, but it might be just what the Ohio State men’s ice hockey team needs. The No. 6-ranked Buckeyes will take a roughly 500-mile bus ride to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., to play Lake Superior State in a two-game series starting Friday. OSU (14-7-4, 10-6-4-1) is winless in its last six games, and playing on the road in the CCHA can be a daunting task. However, getting away from Columbus to play the Lakers (13-11-4, 8-9-3-3) could put the Buckeyes back in the win column. “I think right now, we need a trip like this,” said OSU junior defenseman Devon Krogh. “It’s great team bonding, to get away from Columbus, focus all on hockey and turn this funk we have going on right now around.” OSU has seen its lead in the CCHA, which was seven points in early January, drop to two points during the skid, but coach Mark Osiecki said he thinks the trek up to northern Michigan could get the Buckeyes back on track. “To have 22 players jump on a bus and have all external distractions away, and be able to put that away and just focus on hockey, 22 guys can somewhat rally around each other and move forward,” Osiecki said. The Buckeyes will look to move forward against a team they have already beaten twice this season. OSU and LSSU played on Dec. 2 and 3 in Columbus. OSU won both games, 5-2, and 2-1, respectively. The two wins were the team’s eighth and ninth in a row at the time. In order to win this weekend, Osiecki said the mistakes his team has been making during the winless streak, such as poor line shifts and giving up easy goals, need to be corrected. “The good thing about them is that they’re really fixable,” Krogh said. Krogh helps lead a Buckeye defense that has given up 15 goals in the past four games. OSU has been struggling on the offensive end of the ice as well, scoring seven goals in that four-game span. Krogh said he thinks better defense this weekend could lead to more offense. “Offensively, we’re obviously not as hot as we were, so we need to tighten up defensively,” he said. Strong offensive and defensive play could allow the Buckeyes to take an early lead against the Lakers, something OSU hasn’t done much lately. The last time OSU held a first-period lead was on Dec. 2 against Lake Superior State. “We’ve talked about the first punch and I think we want to go into this weekend and have a good start and hopefully pop the first one,” said freshman forward Max McCormick. Krogh agreed. “It’s not fun to play from behind,” he said. “We always talk about having a first-punch mentality, trying to get off to a good start, and it’s something we have to work on. Obviously, it’s nice to get up and play with a lead. It’s all about turning things around right now.” OSU will try to turn things around starting Friday in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. at 7:05 p.m., and again at the same time Saturday.

Data retention is big business in the online world. Search engines rely on it to better understand and target users, but the length of time they keep such data is always up for debate.Back in 2008 the European Union called for a data retention limit of 6 months, when the norm was (and still remains) more typically 12-18 months. At the time Google protested, but soon after Yahoo! surprised everyone by dropping its data retention time to just 90 days. Others did not follow suit.AdChoices广告Jump back to today, and Yahoo! has decided it can no longer remain competitive or serve customers well by sticking with just 90 days of data. Instead Yahoo! will retain 18 months of data logs. Some effort will go into informing users of Yahoo! services that this is happening, but in a few weeks time it will become the company’s new policy to keep your data much longer. How this effects you as a user depends on whether you rely on Yahoo! or not for searching the Internet. If you use an alternative like Google, then your data is already being held on servers for double-digit months. If your reason for choosing Yahoo! was the short data retention window, then it’s time to look for an alternative search provider.Read more at the Yahoo! Policy Blog, via The RegisterMatthew’s OpinionYahoo! may use the excuse that it is just bringing its service in line with the competition, but that’s not 100% the case. One of the newest search engines on the market, and one that is growing in popularity, is DuckDuckGo. How long does it keep your data? It doesn’t. There is no data retention, it just serves you results and moves on.What Yahoo! doesn’t discuss is why after more than two years it has suddenly realized it can’t function with 90 day data limits. The company just states they will only keep the data for as long as they need it, which apparently means its future plans require a lot more data.Another thing to consider is do users care about this stuff? Apparently some do otherwise Don’t Track tools in browsers and search engines like DuckDuckGo wouldn’t exist. But these are still a minority of users, and I am sure most don’t care or have never even considered such data is of use, let alone being stored by different companies.

DORAL, FLA. (WSVN) – Some of the 11 Cuban migrants who arrived on Hollywood Beach, Saturday, cut and threatened themselves to keep law enforcement from stopping them at sea.The migrants said they were shot with rubber bullets by law enforcement at sea, as the officers tried to keep them from landing ashore.“Eight days without water and without food, and I told them to have hope,” said Luis Martinez, outside World Church Service in Doral. “Do whatever Cubans do, to struggle, to touch land.”Some of those aboard the 10-foot boat began cutting themselves and threatening to hurt themselves with knives so that the law enforcement wouldn’t stop them.“Look, we cut ourselves so they would let us get to the shore,” said Johnachel Morales. “They would slow down, but then come up at us again, and we would cut ourselves again.”Officer Tyson Matthew, of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, said every time law enforcement approached the boat, the migrants made desperate threats.“What I understand, every time law enforcement tried to approach and get near them, they were threatening themselves,” said Matthew. “There were knives on board and several weapons.” One man stabbed himself and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. There were 10 Cuban men and one woman on board the boat.“We spent five days without food and without water. We are happy to get here,” said Morales.A second group of Cubans came ashore in Key Biscayne, Saturday morning. One of those migrants, Yoel Diaz-Hernandez, spoke to 7News in Doral outside Church World Service. “I left my wife and my 1-year-old child to work, and that’s it,” he said through a translator.Police were waiting on the beach in Hollywood, Saturday morning, because they knew the migrants were coming ashore with knives. Funding cuts have forced Alaska hatcheries to stop raising Arctic grayling. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the manager of Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery in Fairbanks, Gary George, says the state chose to cut grayling because the small, native fish are disproportionately expensive to raise. The canceled grayling program makes up 11 percent of the fish that the Fairbanks hatchery planned to stock next year. The decision also removes grayling production at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery in Anchorage.Stocking will continue at near-planned levels for rainbow trout, salmon and arctic char.George says it’ll be easy to restore production at the hatchery if funding for stocked grayling were to be restored in the future.

How Success Happens 4 min read If you want to be successful, you’ve got to be thinking ahead, especially when it comes to business. From technology to finance, industries are constantly changing, so being aware and understanding what the future holds can help your business achieve success. Here are what four successful entrepreneurs have to say about the future of business in 2018. It could be a particular type of real estate, it could be as (relatively) contained as the NASDAQ or something else, but one domino falling will likely trigger contagion. And how might economic panic be good news for some entrepreneurs? There are several possible upsides. For one, when there’s blood in the streets, many formerly expensive things can be bought on the cheap — such as investments, advertising, acquisitions. Also, while raising enormous rounds of venture capital is no longer easy, only the true believers and real performers –entrepreneurs and investors alike — will remain in the game. The signal-to-noise ratio for both investing and learning new skills improves. All my best tech investments were made in the “dot-com depression” of 2008-2009.Lastly, when most of your competitors are cutting costs, laying off employees, slashing salaries and removing niceties from the customer experience, you can do some of the opposite — assuming you’ve been smart with cash flow — and differentiate easily. Look at Steve Wynn and Southwest Airlines crisis responses for good case studies. In summary, and as Tony Robbins said to me, “Winter is coming.” Everything is cyclical, so make sure you’re prepared to be intelligently greedy when others are fearful. Even though we’re not able to fully understand what that future will look like, I think 2018 will push entrepreneurs to balance digital developments with personal touch points. For Glossier, that might mean finding engaging ways to bring digital experiences to life offline or implementing more high-touch practices when it comes to customer experience, but in my opinion, most important will be staying personal and accessible with our community as technology evolves. Password Use Study: massive reuse of passwords by Martin Brinkmann on December 09, 2016 in Security – Last Update: December 12, 2016 – 15 commentsA recent password use study by the German Hasso-Plattner-Institute of roughly 1 billion user accounts concluded that 20% of users were reusing passwords. Additionally, 27% of users used password that were nearly identical with other account passwords.User accounts and passwords are still the dominating method of authentication both locally and online. While companies work on replacing passwords with other methods, think password pills and tattoos, or the increasing use of authentication apps and biometric authentication means, nothing is out there that has replaced the good old username and password combination yet.The authentication scheme has its flaws. Three major ones are that passwords, or their hashes, may be stolen when servers are attacked successfully, that weak passwords are common, and that nothing is keeping users from reusing passwords. These hacks happen frequently, and they hit smaller and larger companies. It is likely that some are not made public at all, but the list of companies that disclosed successful hacks recently includes Yahoo, Dailymotion, VK, MySpace, Friend Finder Network, or Brazzers.Password Use Study: massive reuse of passwordsResearchers of the institute analyzed about 1 billion user accounts. The data came from 31 leaks that were made public either by the attackers themselves or by buyers.About 68.5 million email addresses appeared multiple times in the database; that is about 20% of all user accounts found in the data according to the researchers.About 27% of all users selected passwords were at least 70% identical to other passwords that the user’s used. This indicates minor changes to a core password, for instance by using “princess” as the core password, and variations such as “pr1ncess”, “princess1” or “princ3ss”.These variations are sometimes used if a site’s password policy requires special characters, numbers, or other characters that are absent in the core password. The most common passwords are “123456”, “123456789”, “111111”, “qwerty”, and “12345678” according to the study.Check your email addressThe institute runs an email checker that you may use to find out if the entered email address appeared in one of the leaks. All you need to do is enter your email address, click on the check button, and wait for the results to arrive in your email inbox. If that is the case, it is suggested to change the password immediately to avoid abuse. Also, it is recommended to change the password at other services if you have reused it.The institute is bound to German (privacy) laws. The (German) press release that announced results of the study is available here. Now You: How do you handle passwords?SummaryArticle NamePassword Use Study: massive reuse of passwordsDescriptionA recent password use study by the German Hasso-Plattner-Institute of roughly 1 billion user accounts concluded that 20% of users were reusing passwordsAuthor Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisement
